Fur Rondy and Iditarod: How to Stay warm while enjoying Anchorage's Winter Festivals

Staying warm is vital to enjoying the upcoming Winter Festival's in Anchorage. Temperatures can drop below freezing and being outside is the best way to enjoy all that Fur Rondy and Iditarod have to offer, so you need to plan ahead. Being cold can make it difficult to enjoy all of the outdoor events. When you are warm and comfortable, you are more likely to have a good time and make the most of your trip. Here are a few ideas to keep you toasty during your winter visit.

1. Dress in layers: The key to staying warm in cold temperatures is layering. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a mid-layer for insulation, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer.

2. Invest in quality gear: Invest in good quality boots, gloves, and a warm hat. Look for boots with insulation and a pair of ice grippers or cleats, as well as gloves that are waterproof and windproof. My favorite gloves are these heated gloves with a rechargeable battery for the winter win!

3. Stay dry: Staying dry is essential in cold weather. Make sure to keep your clothes, gloves, and boots dry by bringing extra socks and a change of clothes.

4. Protect your face and head: The face and head are areas where heat can be lost quickly. Make sure to protect them by wearing a warm hat and a buff (a neck gator that can be pulled up to cover your head, under your hat or hood) to keep your face warm.

5. Take breaks indoors: Take breaks to warm up indoors. Look for museums, visitor centers, or shops where you can take a break from the cold.

6. Keep an eye on the weather: Check the weather forecast before heading out and be prepared for any changes.

7. Bring hand warmers and toe warmers: If you decide against the heated gloves and or socks, then chemical hand warmers and toe warmers can be a lifesaver on cold days. They are small, inexpensive, and easy to use, and will help keep your fingers and toes warm. Pro tip! The toe warmers are supposed to go on top of your toes. They will stay (remember to get two of them) warm that way as they need oxygen to stay activated. We also recommend these rechargeable hand warmers that you can wear inside your gloves!

8. Stay hydrated: Dehydration can make you feel colder, so make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Keeping warm coffee or tea in your insulated mug is a great way to get a little boost of warmth and it's reusable.

Staying warm while outside is essential for safety, enjoyment, and access to all of Anchorage’s best winter festival activities. Whether you are watching the Outhouse Races, the Running of the Reindeer, viewing the Snow Sculptures or Ice bowling a few rounds, taking the necessary precautions, will keep you warm and help make the most of your trip to Alaska.
